About the test

Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep?

Sleep allows your body to rest and repair itself, contributing to overall health and wellness. Quality sleep can help restore energy levels, improve mood, enhance alertness, and support cognitive and physical performance. In addition, sleep can contribute to regulating hormones, strengthening the immune system, and reducing stress.

This at-home lab test measures two hormones that can affect sleep quality: cortisol and melatonin. When balanced, melatonin and cortisol levels fluctuate throughout the day. Cortisol peaks in the morning and lowers at night. Conversely, melatonin rises in the late evening, peaking in the early morning. This test measures your cortisol and melatonin levels four times throughout the day for a possible understanding of why you aren’t getting the sleep you need.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and released in response to stressors like illness and exercise. While it’s often referred to as the “stress hormone,” cortisol also has many other bodily roles, including blood sugar and energy metabolism regulation. In most people, cortisol levels are highest in the morning and lowest in the middle of the night. Elevated cortisol later in the day and near bedtime can contribute to insomnia or other sleep issues.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is commonly regarded as the “sleep hormone” because of its role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm. Melatonin production increases when it’s dark and decreases in light.

Questions and Answers

What is an at-home sleep and stress test?

The Home Test Box Comprehensive At-Home Sleep and Stress Test measures two hormones that can affect sleep: cortisol and melatonin.

Melatonin and cortisol levels fluctuate throughout the day. Typically, cortisol peaks in the morning and lowers at night. Conversely, melatonin usually rises in the late evening and peaks in the early morning.

This test measures your cortisol and melatonin levels four times throughout the day for a possible understanding of why you aren’t getting the sleep you need.

What markers are measured with the at-home sleep and stress test?

The test measures cortisol and melatonin levels four times throughout the day.

How does the stress hormone cortisol affect sleep?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. It is often referred to as the "stress hormone" because it plays a role in the body's stress response.

Cortisol levels are typically highest in the morning and gradually decrease throughout the day, generally reaching their lowest levels at night.

High cortisol levels can disrupt sleep, making it difficult to fall and stay asleep.

What are the symptoms of elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol?

Symptoms associated with high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, include:

  • Weight gain
  • Acne
  • Thinning skin
  • Easy bruising
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • High blood pressure
  • Headache
  • Insomnia

What factors affect cortisol levels?

Various factors can affect cortisol levels, including medical conditions like Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, or secondary adrenal insufficiency.

Cortisol can also be affected by the following:

  • Stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Exercise
  • Sleep
  • Serious illness
  • Hot and cold temperatures
  • Certain thyroid disease
  • Obesity
  • Certain medications like birth control pills

How does melatonin affect sleep?

Melatonin is a hormone that plays a key role in regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle.

Typically, melatonin levels start to rise in the evening, reaching their peak around midnight, then gradually decrease throughout the night. When melatonin levels are high, the body becomes relaxed and drowsy, making it easier to fall asleep.

Low levels of melatonin can make it harder to fall and stay asleep and can contribute to insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Various factors can affect melatonin production. For example, exposure to light, including artificial light from electronic devices or bright light in the evening, can suppress the body's melatonin production, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.

Certain medications, such as antidepressants, birth control pills, and caffeine can also interfere with melatonin production.

Who should take an at-home sleep and stress test?

If you struggle to get a good night’s rest and think stress may be the cause, you may benefit from an at-home sleep and stress test.

How can you lower cortisol levels naturally?

Here are seven ways you may be able to lower your cortisol levels naturally:

  • Get enough quality sleep.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Practice mindfulness.
  • Perform breathing exercises.
  • Make time for fun and laughter.
  • Maintain healthy relationships.
  • Eat a nutritious diet.

How can you improve your sleep naturally?

Here are a few sleep habits for a good night’s rest:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Make your bedroom quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature.
  • Remove electronic devices from the bedroom.
  • Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bed.
  • Exercise during the day.

What are the consequences of not getting enough sleep?

Not getting enough sleep can have serious consequences on both your physical and mental health. Some of the most common consequences of chronic sleep deprivation include the following:

  • Fatigue and decreased energy: Lack of sleep can make you tired and sluggish, making it difficult to focus and complete tasks.
  • Mood changes: You may feel irritable, anxious, or depressed when you don’t get enough sleep.
  • Cognitive impairment: Poor sleep can affect your ability to think clearly, learn new information, and make decisions.
  • Weakened immune system: Not getting enough sleep can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses and infections.
  • Increased risk of chronic diseases: Insufficient sleep has been linked to many chronic diseases and conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
  • Increased risk of accidents: Sleep deprivation can affect your reaction time, judgment, and coordination, making you more likely to have accidents, such as car accidents.
  • Decreased physical performance: Inadequate sleep can affect your physical performance by making you feel weaker and less energetic.

Not getting enough sleep can have wide-ranging negative effects on your health and well-being. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.

Why is sleep important?

You need good-quality sleep for many reasons, including the following:

  • Heals and repairs your heart and blood vessels
  • Supports a healthy balance of hormones that make you feel hungry and full
  • Affects your body's insulin response
  • Supports healthy growth and development
  • Affects your immune system
  • Decreases the risk of health problems

How much sleep do adults need?

The amount of sleep an adult needs varies from person to person, but most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following sleep times for adults:

  • Adults aged 18-25: 7-9 hours
  • Adults aged 26-64: 7-9 hours
  • Adults aged 65+: 7-8 hours

It's important to note that these are general recommendations and some people may need more or less sleep. Factors such as age, lifestyle, and overall health can all affect an individual's sleep needs.

It's also important to pay attention to how you feel during the day. If you're constantly feeling tired or having trouble concentrating, you may need to adjust your sleep schedule to get more sleep.

Remember that sleep quality is also important, not just the time spent sleeping. A regular sleep schedule, a comfortable sleeping environment, and avoiding stimulating activities before bedtime can all help improve your ability to get a good night’s rest.

Taking time off from work is a hassle. This test made it easy for me to check my stress levels.

  2. Lauren Wuckert (verified owner) – November 22, 2022

Super easy process and my results came back fast! Rating it 4 stars because you need to collect your sample 4 times and it was kind of annoying to carry the tubes around me. Still easier than going to the lab.

The test was okay. The tubes to collect your samples are kind of big and you have to collect your sample four times. I’m a bit skeptical because my test results came back normal but I am still having trouble sleeping. Going to make an appointment with my doctor for a second opinion.

Love the report! I ordered the sleep and stress test because I was having trouble sleeping. Not only did it let me know that my cortisol was high, but it gave me so much information about cortisol. I feel like an expert lol. Did you know cortisol is highest when you wake up?? I always thought it was higher during work hours. My test cortisol results were a little on the higher side, but overall normal. I started being more mindful of my nighttime habits and winding down a little earlier. I already notice a difference in the time it takes me to fall asleep.

I ordered this test for my husband for Christmas because he has trouble sleeping. It was also for me because he wakes me up lol. We are just waiting for his results. He said it was quick and easy. We are not waiting for his results so I (I mean he) can get some sleep.

My cortisol results came back high! Not that I know why I can’t sleep. Making an appointment with my doctor to figure out a plan. Hopefully, I can get my levels to come down.
